How does it work?
The first step to determine if neurofeedback is right for you is to 'map' your brain. Brain mapping shows where dysregulation is occurring in your brain and can be a great tool to better understand the root cause of symptoms and behaviors.
Mapping your brain is non-invasive, pain-free and completed right in our office at Tree of Hope Counseling offices at 2300 East Avenue in Rochester. A cap is placed on your head with small sensors attached. The sensors are connected to a computer which measures the level of brain function in each part of the brain. This information is then compiled into an extensive report that one of our neurofeedback specialists reviews with you.
If neurofeedback is determined to be an appropriate treatment option, sessions can begin right away. Patients participate in training sessions using a computerized neurofeedback program that teaches the central nervous system to reorganize and regulate brainwave frequencies. Self-regulation is a necessary part of good brain function. Neurofeedback "rewards" the brain to correct itself and adapt more effective patterns.
To retrain the brain, neurofeedback sessions consist of watching TV and/or listening to sounds with special sensors placed on the head. The brain is rewarded (i.e. brightness of the screen) when it is regulating itself in a normal pattern. Neurofeedback has documented, long-lasting effects.
Treatment typically consists of approximately 30 sessions, and can be completed in our office or with a remote unit at home. If you choose to do your neurofeedback at home, our team will support you every step of the way to ensure your treatment goes smoothly.
